How the Book Bag 2010 Fundraiser Works: Fantastic authors from Alaska and well beyond, including the Lower 48 and the UK, have donated books, some of them rare, and many of them signed. A few booksellers and publishers have added to the collection. For $80 (shipping included), buyers receive a specially designed raven logo tote bag filled with at least four randomly assorted books. We'll also throw in something extra --a fifth book from our pile of donated ARCs (advance reader copies), a book mark, or something else. Part of the fun is not knowing what you'll receive. An even bigger part of the fun is knowing your donation is supporting programs at Alaska's new nonprofit writing center. Keep all the books for yourself, or divide them up as holiday gifts. We borrowed this book bag idea from Ayelet Waldman, who used it to raise money for Obama in 2008. Now we're doing it, and Ms. Waldman and her husband, author Michael Chabon, are among the many authors who helped us by personally donating signed books. Join the fun!

A new cookbook for the holiday season

Holiday season is cooking time, and I wish I could tell you that every single one of our book bags had this cookbook, but alas -- only one will. But since I'm going to tuck it into an outgoing box this week, the odds aren't too bad (one in five to ten, maybe?) as long as you're ordering your book bag right now. Kirsten is not only a great writer and chef and lodge owner, she's also on our Board of Directors. We're just a little proud of that fact...
